REVIEW FROM THE SPANISH BOOKSHOP:

The first edition of this new title from Vacation Work is a most welcome addition to the catalogue of titles relating to living and working in Spain. The author's previous title was the excellent and well-researched 'Starting a Business in Spain' and this new comprehensive and up-to-date title does not disappoint. The title is divided into two main parts: Living in Spain and Working in Spain. The wealth of information found in the first part includes five chapters covering issues such as residence and entry requirements, setting up home, daily life and retirement. The title begins with a general introduction including a look at the pros and cons of moving to Spain, and the political and economic structure of the country. It is interesting to note that older residents can find it difficult to adapt but at the same time 75% of those moving to Spain are retired. With one of the highest life expectancies in Europe and a fascinating history and culture Spain will continue to attract all ages. The chapters all begin with a boxed summary of the main points and issues to be covered. Each chapter is then broken down into smaller units and it is the detail within these individual units that makes the title so impressive. So within the chapter on Setting Up Home you have included units on finance, renting property, pets, insurance and wills, cost of running a property and removals. At the end of each unit are details of useful contact addresses and websites for further information on the subject in question. The chapter on retirement is particularly good on the subjects of pensions, finance and healthcare. The second part of the title, Working in Spain, has two extensive chapters: Employment and Starting a Business. The employment chapter gives helpful information on the employment scene, sources of jobs and job ideas as well as covering contracts, wages, the working culture and etiquette, and a regional employment guide. Issues such as procedures for starting a new business, buying a business, business structure, financing your business, employing staff, marketing and generally running your business are covered in the final chapter, Starting a Business. This excellent title is completed with the personal case histories of eight different aged people who have made the move to Spain. Much useful advice can be gained from the experiences of others, such as; 'Better a local gestor who doesn't speak English and pay the extra for a translator, than an English speaker who doesn't know the area' and 'I think it is essential to learn Spanish before coming out here to start a business'.This highly informative title will provide you with all the knowledge needed before, during and long after your move to Spain. Certainly it is an essential buy if you are thinking of moving to Spain.
