Below is the introduction to the guide from the publisher.
A capital city in three ways - European, Belgian and Flemish - Brussels is a place of secret charms, a hospitable and delightful place to visit. The city, Flemish in origin and now greatly influenced by French culture, is a study in contrasts. Despite the turbulence of a sometimes violent history, Brussels is known for its warm and friendly atmosphere. Capital of Art Nouveau, it is endowed with many museums and monuments. Its cosmopolitan nature has contributed to its excellent culinary reputation. Of course, as you walk around and enjoy the city, you will want to sample hot Belgian waffles, fine chocolates, spekuloos biscuits with a cup of coffee, or stop and enjoy a hearty lunch of mussels and chips (the citys emblematic dish) accompanied by a satisfying stein of Gueuze, one of the many fine beers brewed with pride in Belgium. The Bruxelles-Capitale region includes the 19 towns within the Greater Brussels area and is famous for the beauty of its parks and gardens, including the Soignes Forest. The outskirts are well worth an excursion. Visit Laeken "la royale" or the lively districts of Ixelles; relax in the peaceful ambience of St-Gilles, or tour the great basilica of Koekelberg. Take a detour to Africa in the Tervuren museum; stand on the historic ground of Waterloo; marvel at the Gaasbeek and Beersel castles. Brussels has some surprises in store!
