Walking on The Isle of Arran (Cicerone) Walking on The Isle of Arran (Cicerone) Ref: CIC178
The Isle of Arran rises proudly from the Firth of Clyde between Ayrshire and Kintyre. Its mountainous form dominates the open waters of the Clyde and its jagged peaks present a challenge to walkers. Tourism has been important for only the past century. The Isle of Arran has much to offer the visitor and is often described as 'Scotland in Miniature'. Roads are very few, but opportunities to explore the island on foot are many and varied.

The walks in this guidebook include a coupleo of waymarked forest trails, as well as a dozen or so, moderate glen or hill walks. The rest require more effort to complete, heading for the higher mountains and sometimes involving a bit of hands-on scrambling. The routes are sometimes along roads or clear forest tracks, sometimes along hill tracks or paths, or even crossing pathless slopes and traversing rocky mountain ridges. All forty-one of the walks have been chosen to show off the rich variety of landscape types on the Isle of Arran. They seek secluded spots, or aim for the heights, indulging in wide-ranging views or searching for some heritage detail.
Longer routes can be pieced together using portions of the route descriptions. Many of the walks in this guide overlap, or have sections in common, so that it is easy to extend or shorten many of the routes. Some walks stand in isolation, having no easy or quality links with other walks.
