'The author is to be congratulated on the depth and breadth of his research. I learned a lot!' --Sir Gordon Jewkes, former governor of the Falkland Islands
"This well researched guide provides an excellent insight into the myriad opportunities for naturalists, photographers and hikers, and brings the magic of the Falkland Islands to life." -- What Holiday About this Destination
The Falkland Islands are about as far south as land-based tourism gets, best-known by today's discerning traveller as an ecologist's paradise. The rugged mountains and varied coastline are a haven for birds and sea-life, providing almost unlimited opportunities for the avid naturalist, photographer and hiker to explore. Author's Note, by William Wagstaff
Reaching the islands for the first time was a magical experience, from watching upland geese and meadowlarks to admiring the huge expanses of white grass on the bus ride into Stanley. I shall always remember my first walk along Stanley sea front with the faint smell of peat smoke in the air, and the first penguin I saw swimming just offshore.
Standing on the hilltops gives one a feeling of being on top of the world as the islands are laid out at one's feet. The amazing clarity of light in these islands never ceases to amaze me. The wildlife delights in being tame and very photogenic. I hesitate to think how many photos I have taken of penguins, elephant seals and various other creatures over the years. The Falkland Islands are one of those magical places in the world that capture the imagination, and although the weather in not always clement, the overriding memory is of blue sea, blue sky, teeming wildlife and 'smoko' as soon as you get back indoors.
Will Wagstaff is a freelance wildlife tour guide living is the Isles of Scilly. He has visited many islands around the world, but counts the Falkland Islands as his second favourite group of islands after Scilly and has been lucky enough to have visited these distant shores on many occasions over the years. He was the first conservation officer of the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust but now spends his summer leading his Island Wildlife Tours around Scilly.
