Eritrea is a country characterised by substantial cultural and environmental diversity and an infamously turbulent past. Above all else, what endears most visitors to this country is the remarkable kindliness and unreserved humanity of the Eritrean people. Making friends in Eritrea is an unavoidable pleasure. If you begin to comprehend the immeasurable suffering that these people have had to endure and the degree of success with which they have been able to put this tragic history behind them, it makes it even more remarkable that their compassion towards visitors is so resolute.
The road to peace and democracy remains a troubled one, but whatever obstacles the people of Eritrea still have to face, for the visitor the same endearing features will always make you feel welcome and the country will always provide a diversity of activities and experiences that will have you wanting to come back for more. The first years of Eritrean independence saw an almost fanatical romanticism emerge amongst those who have been lucky enough to experience its infancy. The country might have now passed through a troubled adolescence, but maturity is just around the corner. It would be foolish to consider Eritrea more exceptional than any other country, but it is different and it adds a whole new dimension for those familiar with the rest of the African continent.
